Now here's a thing!

http://soundcloud.com/badvibrations

That there link above features the entirity of the sole (and hideously rare) EP released by New Model Soldier (plus one later recording). New Model Soldier, of course, was one of Russell's favourite Sheffield bands of the early '80s, and their singer David Kurley later provided the lyrics to Anorexic Beauty.  Listen to Slik for another, rather unexpected, way in which they might have been an influence on Pulp!

Thanks for that, Mark! Particularly enjoyed track one, and track four to a lesser extent. Are you seeing an infuence on Acrylic Afternoons, or something more obvious...?

I'd like to claim an influence of track one on 'Preposterous Tales of Ken MacKenzie' if I may.

With Slik I see a distinct influence on Being Followed Home - was interesting to listen to, shall do so again soon once my backlog of work emails is cleared and I can concentrate fully. (We're mostly all old now. Isn't it crap!)

I can see where you're both coming from, but is there not something familiar about the first, ooh, six notes of Slik?

I can't see it! Please either spill the beans, or PM me, or... something so I can get back to work! It's 22:23 and I have to get this done, and this is going to bug the shit out of me!

So Mile End is the firstlast fusion of New Model Soldier and old Sega game, Wonder Boy. Quite unique, I'd say

(perhaps you'll have to listen to the more violin-heavy live versions to see this, perhaps not...)

Maybe Russell paid Kurley £1 for the riff...?

Further geek fact: Anorexic Beauty in fact predates these songs, having originally been performed by Kurley circa 1979 in a band called Blimp, featuring a young Magnus Doyle on drums.

Oh and another geek fact: Kurley has more recently fronted a covers band called Bigshambles, also featuring one N Banks. Must have a thing for Pulp drummers...

The first three tracks sound very much like early Human League but that last track, Silk, is almost exactly like a mid 80's Pulp track. I'm really glad to have heard these.

Ey up - Dave Kurley here - I'm not sure where you got your information from, but as far as I can remember, Anorexic Beauty was a song that I originally sang with 78 or 79 with Trapdoor Spiders (originally Boll Weevil and the Trapdoor Spiders - I was Boll Weevil) and later, with Rapid Eye Movements (no relation to the more well-known American band) - I can't ever remember having been in a band with Magnus (there may have been a jam session at the Hallamshire one night, but I'm pretty sure the drummer was Pete Boam that night. The Blimp, if memory serves, was Simon Barfield and Nick Taylor's band.

Hello Dave!

Sorry about the confusion about all the early bands - I think I must've mis-remembered something that Nick Taylor told me. I think he had something to do with Rapid Eye Movements didn't he?

The jam night, would that possibly be the August 1982 one mentioned here?

Hmmm - it's likely, to be fair - I was somewhat chemically altered that night! Nick played guitar in Rapid Eye Movements and The Blimp - I was at 6th form with him.

So tell us about Anorexic Beauty then... how did those lyrics come about, and how did they end up in the Pulp repertoire? Were the versions by your early bands very different from the Pulp version? And did you really sell the rights to Russell for a quid?

If you want to see what NMS looked like back in the day I took some photos which I have put here: New Model Soldier

I used to photograph a few bands back in the 80s.  What's annoying is I used to work with a Mate who came back from the Whimpy burger bar and said he'd just watched a band play - it was Pulp. Wish I'd gone with him now - I could have some really cool photos!!!

I particularly like the image of the cinema listings from '82, I went to some of those! You might consider exporting your material to the Sheffield History forum if youy want a wider audience, lots of good stuff on there.

Thanks - I set it up after spending time on Richard Hawley's forum, which had lots of people talking about great sheffield expereinces. I got the idea that we ought to have something that went a bit further and became a all things Sheffield kind of site. It hasn't taken off but I left it going as I uploaded loads of pics, including tickets from gigs which people have been finding interesting.

Now here's an unexpected development... New Model Soldier have reformed.

They've got a Facebook page: www.facebook.com/newmodelsoldier

They've been doing Anorexic Beauty (here as 'Rough Beauty'): soundcloud.com/badvibrations/sets/needled-silo-worm-rehearsal - bit different from the Pulp version.

They played a few days ago, for the first time in 35 years, at the Cremorne in Sheffield. Russell and Nick were in attendance.

They're playing at The Washington on September 12th...
