Have you all seen this? As part of 6musics' XXXXpop week? Sophie Ellis Bextor doing rather a nice cover of dyrtft..I was maybe expecting an abomination, but fair play, its alright.

I stumbled across it on the red button last night. I quite liked her anyway from the little I know about her. She was fun on Strictly Come Dancing last year, playing the misfit outsider with Brendan very well (I have an 11 year old daughter, so I have to watch it, that' s my excuse and I'm sticking to it). And trouncing Victoria Beckham in a fight she didn't even seem to know she was in is all to the good. So when they were doing the suspensey bit in the interview about what she was going to pick, I was quite pleased when she went for Pulp. I did wonder if she would feminise the lyrics, but she didn't bother.

Its alright, but it lacks the urgency and drama that is so key to the song.

Yeah, fair play for having a go. Wasn't expecting a replica of the dramatic pauses and well-timed intonations that Jarvis uses but it would have been cool if she had done the last chorus in a minor key like Jarvis does live (and should have done on record imo).

I remember Sophie saying on a tv show years ago that she was a huge Pulp fan. I didn't realise til a quick Wiki check just now, how successful her own career has been too.

When I sing along to the album version I always go 'minor' for the last chorus :)

Wasn't her little brother, Mini-Jarvis in the "Little Soul" promo?

watched this today and have to agree, it was ace. Not often we all agree that someone covering a Pulp song did it well. Musically it sounded really good too.

Oh, I love it too!!!!!! It's such a good song and I'm happy, that she uses the same arragnement. Is there anywhere a video with jarvis doing the end with this minor key?

I don't know about her little brother, I just know, that she had a double in the "Bad Cover version"- Video

It mightn't be technically accurate to say he sings it in a minor key but listen to any live version of DYRTFT and when he repeats the chorus at the end his vocal shifts to a downbeat tone.

It was her brother in the vid to Little Soul, yeah. Not a bad version but her voice is really irritating.

Great to see Ed Harcourt on keys there.

I finished Sophie's bio Spinning Plates last week. Found this gem of a passage :

The most ridiculous thing that happened in that flat was probably the time Jarvis Cocker came back with me from a party. For some reason Mike hadnt come with me but he was home when we got in. At the party Id got talking to Jarvis who was just finishing Pulps album This is Hardcore. We talked about music and pressure Jarvis was concerned about how his new album would be received after the success of Different Class. We then got onto the topic of Alan Partridge, the brilliant Steve Coogan character whose comedy series had just launched. I said, If you want you can come back to mine to watch it. My boyfriend has recorded the new episode so we can see it.' Jarvis seemed quite keen to come back and watch it so we hopped in a taxi. When we got back to the flat, Mike was lying horizontal on the tiny couch. 'Hey Mike,' I said cheerily, 'this is Jarvis. He's come to watch Alan Partridge with us.' Mike was a bit sleepy but sat up and put on the recording. Our flat was so tiny that there wasnt really room for all of us on the sofa, so I sat next to Mike while Jarvis was on a little upright wooden chair against the side wall. He didn't look very comfy. We sat in a slightly awkward silence watching the episode before Jarvis made a quick trip to the loo. He then said a very quick goodnight and headed out into the night. 'Was that a bit weird?' I asked Mike. I couldn't put my finger on it but I felt that though Jarvis had come over and done exactly as we had chatted about at the party for some reason it all felt a bit odd. I promise it wasn't until a good while later that it occurred to me that maybe Jarvis hadn't expected us to literally just watch Alan Partridge. The final punchline happened later that night when I was going to bed. As I went into the bathroom I saw something I'd forgotten about. The previous tenants had stuck band stickers all over the loo seat including one you could only see when you put the seat up, as Jarvis must have had done, to reveal a big sticker with PULP on it. To this day Im not sure if Jarvis saw that and thought we must be really big fans, or that we really hated the band.

Agreed, although i prefered when he was a solo artist. So many good songs in the early 00s. But I guess being a writer for other people make more money.

As for that cover, its ok. Pulp, like the Beatles or the Beach Boys, is a band that cant be covered. Their songs only work played by the people who wrote them.

Poor Jarv. I've been in situations like that- keep the party going! Good to socialise! Then you end up at a stranger's flat, it's weird and you just want to go home.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor actually reprised this cover live in Sheffield earlier this week!
