Reducing Ink Flow
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

I have a query in relation to adjusting ink flow.

I am currently using 1941 Blue striped Duofold vacumatic with medium nib.

I use Parker blue-black Quink in and it puts down a fairly wet line that takes some time to dry.  I have other medium nibbed pens that write with a similar width line, but don't seem to take so long to dry (virtually instantly) with the same ink.

Any pointers on how to reduce the ink flow to the paper?  I'm guessing it has something to do with the gap between the feed and the nib.

Do I have to take the pen to the local specialist, or can I do it myself?

Thanks.

Gerard.

Your right the wetness of the nib is related in part to the gap betwen the feed & bottom of the nib.

It sounds like you need to heat set your nib. It's easy & something I'm sure you can do.

Empty the pen of ink. shake dry. using a heat gun on a low setting, hold the feed above the heat stream for a couple of seconds until it begins to warm up just to the point of being able to be the tiniest bit soft/bendable. This is a hard rubber feed so it wont take much heat at all until it can be reset.

with your thumb, stroke fron the bottom of the feed where it enters into the section toward the tip of the nib. Hold your thumb on the bottom of the feed and quench it in a cup of cold water to set the new shape. If your thumb is burnt/blistered you got the feed too hot...lol. If it's too dry now then heat it back up again and strike it in the reverse direction a tad. Play around until you find the right flow for yourself.

Good luck & have fun
Dennis

Thanks for the replies.

Dennis,  when you mentioned a heat gun, do you mean something like a hairdryer?  That's all I have that throws heat (and I'll have to do it sneakily when my wife is out!) biggrin

Or I could put the pen out in the Aussie summer sun for a while.  The shade temp here is only about 102 F degrees!  biggrin  (only joking....I wouldn't put my pen in the sun... you could just about fry an egg on the pavement at the moment!)

Cheers,

Gerard.

A hair dryer will work in a pinch. Get a piece of heavy card stock and form a cone on the end of the hair dryer to help focus the heat &tape it down. A basic rule of thumb is if the air stream is too hot for your fingers it's too hot for the pen.

Totally useless info.

The origins of the phrase rule of thumb. Looks back to a law in england that stated you werent allowed to beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb.

AAHHH the good old days...lol.
