Legal Ivory. To ban or not to ban?

Need info. on antique pocket watches

2009-12-13 23:02:13

Hi!  I am new to Antique Spider and would like to know if anyone here can give me any information about antique pocket watches.  I have two which are family heirlooms.  One watch is gold (ornate, about 100 years old).  The other is silver and probably dates from just prior to World War I.  I am possibly interested in selling both watches, but I would like to find out more about them before I proceed.  So far, I've been unable to locate any helpful websites about antique pocket watches.  I will await your replies with great interest.  Thank you!

Expert Waterford Crystal Appraisals and Identification

2009-09-09 14:27:01

Hi,

This website looks really good. My thoughts are it will turn into a really good web site for buying and selling antique and luxury items. I hope to be adding it my Special Reports on "How To Spot A Waterford Crystal Fake" and "Where to Buy and Sell Your Waterford Crystal".

If I can help in any way to promote AntiqueSpider, please let me know.

Best,
James

Lalique crystal

2009-07-06 13:18:39

Has anyone sold Lalique crystal on this website?  I've attempted e-bay, amazon.com and craigslist, to no avail!  I heard about this website through an anonymous e-mailer who saw my listing on craigslist, but haven't heard or know much about it.  Anyone have comments, they are welcome!

Is anybody out there?

2009-06-20 20:43:17

We are longtime eBay and Ruby Lane sellers of antique smalls, and have moved some smalls to this site, with an auction format and what we think are competitive prices.  We are seeing no action at all, nothing on anyone's watch list.  Question to other sellers:  are you doing well?  Is the auction format the best way to go, or should we just do best offer on a straight sale?  Our concern is that we may be just wasting our time on this site.  Would appreciate any feedback from sellers and buyers out there.

Why AntiqueSpider

2009-06-14 12:32:58

Eye-Opening Experience

Our 10 year experience on eBay has shown that only a very small percentage of their more than 100 million registered users browse the website for Art & Antiques. Furthermore, of those browsers interested in Art & Antiques, an even smaller fraction are looking to make high ticket purchases. Serious buyers have to wade through a myriad of inconsequential items to find something of real value because ‘rubber duckies’ and the like crowd the site.

In addition, eBay’s new policies have made it virtually impossible for fair and honest dealers to conduct a profitable business on their website. When we calculated the actual costs involved with running an eBay store it proved to be an increasingly unprofitable exercise. In conversations with colleagues who have listed on eBay we heard the same complaints.

The Last Straw

We are antique and decorative arts dealers who have been in the business for more than thirty years. We have never broken any laws regarding the sale of ivory. In fact, it is absolutely legal to trade in ivory in the United States if the pieces are pre-ban and not shipped overseas. Mammoth ivory is legal to be sold and shipped worldwide. Bone products hurt no one because the material is gathered from animals that have been slaughtered for food or that have died naturally.

Yet, in their infinite wisdom, eBay prohibited the sale of elephant ivory products on January 1, 2009. Some of us will agree that it was a noble gesture on their part to try and protect this magnificent species but in their zeal to create this new image, eBay saw fit to ban mammoth ivory as well. Mammoth fossil is the remains of a species that became extinct more than 25,000 years ago! In addition, eBay banned hippo tooth and animal bone products as well. eBay removed a legal mammoth ivory item we had listed and a member of their Trust and Safety department told us, "I don't care if it is bone, I say it's ivory." eBay suspended our account for a day and eliminated all of our listings, most of which were porcelains, clocks, bronzes, etc.

Blatant Hypocrisy

eBay claims that unscrupulous dealers will sell ivory products by saying they are bone or mammoth. "We can't tell the difference from the photos," another Trust and Safety ‘genius' informed us. The hypocrisy eBay has shown is monumental. They allow designer bags and faux ivory products to be sold. How are they able to tell the real from the fake through the photos? eBay’s thoughtless actions have caused innumerable third world families who plied a trade in these products to be deprived a living.

Well, we've had enough. We have decided to start this new site, AntiqueSpider, with more features than eBay offers and a return to a safe, equitable and hassle-free environment. Our mission is to direct our advertising budget towards buyers and sellers of better quality collectibles. We invite bargain hunters and encourage sellers to offer closeouts and items at all price ranges. However, our primary focus will be facilitating safe big ticket transactions.

Attention Disgusted Sellers On eBay’s Online Auction Website

Are you tired of being nickled and dimed to death by eBay’s excessive fees? Have you had enough of their arbitrary and destructive rules? Are you sick of their incompetent customer assistance staff? Have you dreamed about an online auction site that could generate traffic & cares about each individual seller?

If you answered ‘Yes' to any of the above questions, then welcome to AntiqueSpider, the new alternative to the leading online auction website!

AntiqueSpider is a father and son project created to serve sellers on eBay who have grown tired and frustrated by the incompetence of eBay’s staff and their punitive rules.

The new AntiqueSpider site is being constructed in an easy to use format with customer service as our first priority. Won't you help us build this online auction site, an alternative to the monolith that eBay has become?

We need your help to make this work. It cost a lot to develop the software and we will be spending even more money on advertising to draw both sellers and buyers to the site. We ask you to join us in this endeavor and we want to hear from you.

Tell us your needs and we will do everything in our power to fulfill them, as long as they are legal and don't step on anyone's shoes.

We are also relying on the honesty of the sellers in this environment to insure that any sales derived from AntiqueSpider will be consummated here and the earned commission paid. If sellers try to circumvent the fees this sight will disappear and the safe haven we envision will die.

If we gather enough support we can create that safe auction community we all long for. So, sign up today! Help AntiqueSpider become the place where both sellers and buyers are treated fairly and equitably! http://www.antiquespider.com

About The Founders Of AntiqueSpider

2009-06-14 12:31:21

AntiqueSpider is a family owned and operated business. We are powersellers on The Leading Online Auction Website with more than 2,500 positive feedbacks and a 100% score.

The Leading Online Auction Website's recent ban on mammoth ivory and elephant ivory motivated us to start up AntiqueSpider. Read about the BAN.

eBay's ban led to a gap in an important market in the art industry. We saw an opportunity to create a new online venue to satisfy demand and quickly formed a small expert team. We developed our own software and are working hard to populate the site with exciting and desirable works of art. AntiqueSpider is designed to offer buyers and sellers a safe place to trade in LEGAL IVORY, which includes mammoth, hippo tooth, bone and other materials, as well as other categories of art, antiques and collectibles.

Thanks for stopping by. We hope your experience with us is a positive one. http://www.antiquespider.com

Registering to sell

2009-05-30 12:21:14

I did not register to sell here because it is NOT a secure website - NO SSL certification.  I will NOT give my credit card information up front to anyone who does NOT have a secure site.

Let me know when your site is secure and I may change my mind.  I also could find NO information or references  (good or bad) on the Web about using this site.

AuctionBytes - The Online Resource for online sellers has never heard of you, either.  So I won't be posting here for the forseeable future.

carved ivory

2009-05-23 14:14:11

My grandfather collected ivory animals.  They are very beautiful and included, dragons, elephants, monkeys, camels, etc.  They range in size from 1/16 of an inch (really) to 2 inches.  My mother has them in a glass case in her apartment in a retirement community.  They are not very secure and I thought she should have them evaluated by an expert.  Is there any point in doing this?  If they are stolen can they be sold?

I am visiting AntiqueSpider for the first time tonight.  A great looking site and easy to navigare too.  I'm a little disappointed that there isn;t a whole lot of content but I realize it's early and am optimistic that this one will be a winner.  Good luck with it.

Beware of paying with paypal for ivory items

I recently purchased an ivory item in Antique Spider and paid for it with Paypal.  Apparently the same Ebay rules regarding ivory apply also to Paypal payments even if is not an Ebay item.  They have blocked both of my accounts.  So beware!

REPRODUCTIONS

2009-03-01 16:46:10

I really like and embrace the concept of an alternative site for buying and selling antiques, art and collectibles;;;;and wish this endeavor good success!  However, I was sorely disappointed to find REPRODUCTIONS listed. Hopefully, this will change in the future and no unsuspecting buyer will be duped into thinking they are purchasing a genuine antique. Perhaps a separate listing category for Reproductions or a policy requiring Bold print to alert the buyer that an item is not genuine.

the sale of elephant ivory

2009-02-16 15:05:53

The elephant / human issue is the hottest controversy in the animal rights and conservation inner circle. The problems range from elephants infringing on human occupied lands, i.e. crop raiding, to the lack of governmental infrastructure to protect endangered wildlife, to issues like the continued demand for ivory tusk. There are no easy answers to any of these issues.

The founders of http://www.antiquespider.com are profound lovers of the majestic elephant. We sit on a controversial side of the issue because we advocate the sale of items derived form ivory bearing animals provided that the activity is heavily regulated and controlled.

We feel that other elephant lovers must be made to understand the urgency of continuing the trade in legal ivories for the future survival of existing populations of elephants worldwide.

First of all, protecting elephants requires a great deal of money. It requires among other things, the acquisition of land for herds to roam on and the hiring and maintenance of security forces to safeguard against poachers. It requires proper infrastructure to maintain both of those things.

The sale of ivory legally acquired from permitted hunting or animals killed to control population generates income that can be put back into the system of protecting the elephant. Its ironic.

There are elephant reserves that have anywhere from 40 to several hundred pounds of ivory specimens that are derived from manicuring living elephants.

If that ivory can be circulated into the economy and help continue to preservation causes.

The other issue is there are many millions of art items, jewelry and raw specimen that are old and have been in circulation for many, many years.

Mammoth ivory is in circulation in great volume and in many instances replaces the demand for modern day elephant tusk.

Our opinion is that if collectors have access to old articles derived from ivory specimens, they will no be as likely to seek out ivories derived from illegally acquired specimens.

If old ivory and mammoth is banned, and legal traders are shut out from the trade,  illegal traders step in and command a greater prices for illegal ivories.

The issue is complex. And we invite opinions on our open forum.

A percentage of AntiqueSpider’s profits from the fees collected will be donated to the Riddle Elephant Sanctuary in Arkansas.

AntiqueSpider wants to help make sure that the trade in all legal ivories remains above ground by creating a venue for people that own 1-5 pieces and dealers with many pieces to sell their items. Our site insists that sellers of all items with any amount of ivory or any kind comply with all applicable laws.

As part of our on going effort to help preserve the sancturaries for all species of elephants Antiquespider donates a portion of its profits to Riddle's Elephant Sanctuary in Arkansas , USA.  http://elephantsanctuary.org

Legal IVory

2009-02-15 14:09:56

Copyright AntiqueSpider 2009

Since before recorded history, mankind has used animal byproducts as religious and spiritual symbols as well as amulets to ward off evil spells. The use of animal bone, teeth and tusks is a part of every indigenous people's culture.
Elephant ivory, bear claws, whale teeth all had symbolic meaning to ancient people. The items derived from animal products are often decorative and serve no function as tools.

In the 19th century western man began to decimate and slaughter animals en masse and caused the actual or near extinction of many species of majestic animals.
This created a huge inventory of elephant ivory tusks and marine animal's teeth. The market for such items flourished and developed into an art form that was beautiful to some while grisly to others.

Today, the vast majority of African Elephant ivory stockpiles are derived from animals killed to control their populations.
Much human and animal blood has been shed to possess these items which have no intrinsic value other than as luxurious symbols of wealth and a power over nature. No one disagrees that  poachers who slaughter the majestic elephant and hack from his face his ivory tusks -- sometimes while the creature still breathes his last suffering breath -- are monsters deserving of the same fate.

Gorillas, lions and other trophy big game are all undeserving of the barbaric fates that mankind has imposed on these helpless animal species.

That is one side of the story. As we allow it to unfold we must examine the other social, political and economic ramifications to the use and sale of legally acquired PRE-CITES IVORY TUSK (there's no such thing as pre-ban because there is NO BAN on legal ivory.)

First, let us examine some of the uses that items derived from ivory have provided human beings over the centuries. Ivory has been used in the manufacture of furniture, jewelry, weapons, amulets, pistols grips, sculptures, cue balls and all sorts of decorative items.

There are people who don't collect any items of art but especially dislike ivory, and there are others who covet artifacts and have no problem with owning a tusk whether carved or raw. Some protesters of the sale of ivory don't give a hoot that third world families depend on the trade of ivory to sustain their well-being. Conservationists wish everyone would stop eating animal flesh and subsist on vegetables and fruits alone. Within those groups there are factions that are tolerant of controlled trade in these products while others are adamantly opposed and often turn to violence to impose their views. These people are sometimes referred to as ‘eco-terrorists' and in their bid to ‘protect' the endangered animals will often bring about the destruction of property and even human death.

There is a middle ground answer to solving this problem. Stricter laws need to be enacted against poachers and a more vigilant group of enforcers should see to the prevention of those criminals breaking those laws. Both solutions require funding.

It is ironic that the governmental sale of legally acquired ivory - directly funds the animal safeguarding programs implemented by many countries.

Imposing a ‘luxury tax' imposed on buyers of legally acquired byproducts from protected animals would also help pay the costs of protecting endangered or threatened species. In this way the animals can be protected, the families of traders, as well as the artisans who turn the raw material into art, and the dealers of the world can make a fair living.
