Arthra Apo Australia

Sta Ellinika apo to APE kai apo to site tou Neo Kosmou Australia :)

Sold out η συναυλία της Βίσση

Greek diva back in town

Maria Anastasopoulos-Tsekouras speaks to Anna Vissi on the eve of her tour down under

She is by far, the best selling female Greek artist of all time. Having sold 9.5 million albums worldwide and gone platinum 28 times, Anna Vissi needs no introduction.

With a career spanning over thirty years, the Greek diva is once again, for the third time, back on our shores.

Together with an entourage of 20 people, Vissi will kick off her Australian tour this Thursday night at the Metro nightclub, followed by a sit-down concert on Friday at the Melbourne Showgrounds and on Saturday at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Taking a break from rehearsals for her Australian tour, Vissi, currently in Athens, says has she has no doubts this will be her best Australian tour so far.

"I am coming with a big orchestra and very good musicians. We have been working together closely for the past two years and the show will open with a very good singer and a very famous one indeed, Konstantinos Christoforou from Cyprus. I am glad that he is performing with me because we are going to sing a lot of duets that I used to sing with Nikos Karvelas," she says.

Fans should expect the unexpected, as this time round, Vissi says her concerts will be different.

"I get bored doing the same thing over and over, so I will go with the people's choices and spontaneous paragelies (requests). The audience can ask me to sing any songs and even if I have not rehearsed them, the musicians will know how to play them," she says.

Not having performed for quite some time now, Vissi says she is full of energy and in a great mood to go back on stage.

"Fortunately, this mood finds me in Australia," she says, adding that she does not have any expectations, but is ready for surprises.

"I didn't know what Australia looked like the first time I came there, but what I lived and what I experienced was pure, fresh and kind. I met people who knew most of my songs and it was very flattering to see them embrace me with such warmth and love.

And you cannot count love. It's either there or it isn't. I don't value it as a quantity and I don't expect more of it. Actually, what I do expect is to see the same people, because I remember some faces. That would be nice. So instead of expecting something, I am coming with a lot of orexi (appetite)," she says.

Often referred to as the Greek Madonna in many countries, but known to her Greek-speaking fans as 'Thea' (Diva/Goddess), Vissi is a role model for all other Greek pop performers and one who creates all the latest music and fashion trends.

She is constantly changing her look, but never ceases to amaze. A question no doubt on everybody's lips is, how does she look so good?

"So good?" she laughs.

"I think appearance comes from the inside. You can either look at it metaphorically or literally. Meaning, if you eat good, you have good skin and you don't get sick easily. If you feel good, you look good. You shine. Your eyes give this glance of happiness. I am not forcing myself to look good and I am not putting myself into ridiculous and fake procedures to look good, like extremely extravagant things that could change my appearance. As a woman I am doing very little things to help my growing. Yes, I am growing and I accept that, without pretending to be a baby, but I feel like a baby. Well not like a baby, but I feel young. I am young at heart all the time," she says.

"You look young," I tell her.

"Thank you. I hope you see me close and say the same thing," she laughs.

Looking back on her journey through life, from the very young age of 12, where she won first place at a 'Best Voice' contest held in Cyprus, to now, as 'The Queen of Greek Pop,' Vissi says while she may have changed in appearance, her character remains the same.

"Maybe, and I have to put the maybe in brackets, I have improved, or maybe, I have become a better person. But I cannot judge myself. Only God can judge me. We will all be judged by God at the end of our life," she says.

It's no secret however that music has been the link of happiness in Vissi's life. Combining a magnificent voice with an exceptional presence on stage, the singer continues to flourish in Greece, Cyprus and abroad.

Like all of us, she has encountered obstacles throughout her life and career, but she tries to make these experiences non-existent.

"Like everybody, I have obviously been through bad times. I don't remember the bad things though because I am a person who doesn't really let things traumatise me because I think I am so blessed to be in music. I am surrounded by music, which is a privilege and a pro in my life. Compared to other people that were not so lucky, I don't really need to ponder the bad things in life. And I don't have the right to say I have been through so many bad things and cry about them. I just keep on with the good things and I am very grateful for my success and my experience. I have received so much love from people and while sometimes I do feel it's not real love, I don't think it has to be real love. It's just a love for my songs and for my voice and I am happy that I am giving people something that they enjoy," she says.

With a new Greek album on the way, Vissi says, she is not in any rush to have it out in stores any time too soon.

"I'm going to take my time and make it good," she says.

As for a new English album?

"Not yet. I don't want to go and do something just for the sake of doing it. I would love to throw into the Australian, American or European market, something that would be me this time, not something that has to have a mainstream sound as they call it. I want to go with the ethnic stuff. I want to do what Anna Vissi does in Greek and if I can find something and translate it into English, then that's what I will do," she adds.

Very nice article.   About the ethnic English songs, I'm not going to lie.  I may have heard some short clips of some various songs.  THEY SOUND AMAZING.  I just have to ask why Anna didnt try one of those for Eurovision.

I hate to say it, but in the Greek war of Music it may hurt her to release her album later. As much as I don't want to admit it, a release after Despina Vandi will hurt.

Excellent article...Thank you so much Desilla for finding it and giving it to us! Why would Anna be "hurt" if she releases her alboum later than Vandi's? I cannot see any reasons..Moreover, her sound's going to change as we know so there is not going to be any comparison. Why are you say sth like that rox?

Hurt in 2 ways.  An album released ahead on hers, would give Vandi the lead in the "sales war".  Also, it now looks like Heaven is planning to release Vandi, Mazoankis, Petrelis, and Lyrta (by Fivos) all around the same time.  When it comes down to it, beside us fans most people wont buy all the "good" albums.  Too much money.  Then piracy comes into play.

I'm sure that Anna has thought about everything, she is very smart.

She has very well.  She wanted to release the album around Christmas for a lead, but then some voice problems came into play.  Now in this interview she says she is in "no rush".  Maybe we will have to wait a while
