Because of the Bush economy, I have a lot of time on my hands and I often spend it listening to the news, as I'm sure many of you do as well.

Are there certain stories that you wish would just go away and never be reported on again? Are there stories or topics which are so inane that they should be banned to one crappy news channel that no one watches?

Lately I've had to endure a week of Pope news. No one needs up-to-the-minute status reports of the pope's condition. I was listening to a very interesting debate concerning 1st ammendment rights, and they interrupted with breaking news: "The pope just shifted his weight and opened one eye!!!" Who cares? We don't need a play-by-play of someone's operation. Wait until 6pm, let us know that he's alive, and stop treating it like it's a major news story. It's also not news whenever important people get a cold. That goes for Michael Jackson too.

And what about this independently wealthy dingleberry who's flying non-stop around the world in a plane? I'm sick of these self-important millionaires who can't think of anything better to do with their fortunes than traversing the globe. Why is this news? Who cares about some rich dork scootin' around in a hot-air balloon that cost more than the GNP of most small nations? This dufus didn't even bring enough fuel and now he may not make it. Wah. Why doesn't he charter his own commercial plane ride, give the excess money he's wasting to people who are fighting to stay out of bankruptcy and stay off my TV.

And missing children have got to be the worst. Last thursday, a little girl went missing in Florida. Immediately every news channel was covering the story, interviewing the family, making assumptions and updating us every 20 minutes to let us know "we haven't found her yet. Now a missing child is certainly newsworthy, and I realize the importance of getting the word out to the public. But children go missing 20 times a day in this country. You never hear about them!?!? This kid isn't special. She's not the daughter of a senator, or a heart transplant recipient...why not have a channel just for missing persons? It doesn't belong on a national news program every half-hour.

Just a few news items that bug the hell outta me.

If one missing child can be found before harm comes to them the news coverage is well worth it. I'm sorry you busy day was interupted because of a child!

We do get a lot of news coverage that seems silly. However, in my oppinion missing children are worth my time. The amber alert system has proven to be very effective in locating missing children.

I will not go out of the guidelines of this forum, so my oppinion of your views will stay with me. For the record, I strongly support news coverage of missing children.

I would have to agree with alwayswatching!

Wow, what a wierd slant on things Mindcrime has. Too much TV...you need to listen to more radio. Good radio. Like WLVL and Scott Leffler's radio show Dialog. Anyway, Mindcrime says 20 kids a day go missing in the US and that it bothers him (or her) to be disturbed from watching "the news."

Here's my viewpoint-

Missing children, all 20 of them a day, should be on the nightly, noon and evening news. There should be a crawl on the bottom of EVERY CHANNEL. That is, until it stops. Yeah, I know--pick that one apart. Too bad Mindcrime is not a mother, father, a Catholic, OR a missing child.

Mindcrime, what if you had to walk "the mile" in shoes of a kidnapped kid? As for the Pope, pray for him. He leads millions of souls of the earth. I'm not Catholic...but if the leader of YOUR religion was ill, I suppose I wouldn't mind if I was kept updated. No, I wouldn't mind (crime) at all.

When he does pass Mindcrime, you will have to withstand the constant vigil of watching the Papal Chimney on TV for the different colored smoke to see when they have chosen a new leader.

I view these times as very reverent. Perhaps you should too. Regardless of your beliefs.

Think about it will ya?

DID ANYONE ELSE get the ironic dichotomy of this posting--
In it the writer says that they were watching a subject on television about First Amendment rights (free speech) and then, the writer denounces the news' free speech right to report ?
OK, just me too scents.

Now hold on ...

First and foremost, understand what free speech is. And MindCrime (henceforth MC) is not trying to squelch free speech ... he's just explaining what HE does and doesn't want to hear about on the news.

And I don't always agree with MC, but he's got some good points here.

FIRST - I don't care about the pope's health. Not one bit. The pope is a religious figurehead and nothing more. The fact that he refuses to step down and allow another to take his place proves that, IMHO. We all know that the pope is old and ill. If we cared about his health that much, we'd stay tuned to CNN or another 24/7 news channel. Or listen to catholic radio all day. I'm sure they give updates. I don't have anything against the pope, but I'm just as concerned about his health as I am the queen's. They both play an equal role in my life - none.

SECOND - While I find it amusing that this rich people spend their money trying to "fly around the world with one hand tied behind their back" or whatever, I see MC's point. It doesn't affect us. And there's no real reason for us to care. It's not new. It's not like somehow if he makes it back to Kansas, our lives will change. It's not news to the majority of the world - entertaining as it may be. (The Real World is also entertaining ... but they don't break in with news reports about it).

AND FINALLY - As a father of two, I feel for anyone missing a child. I can tell you that I have succumbed to utter horror when out in public and I lose sight of one of them for the smallest of time periods. And if one were to really go missing, I'd call the police. Fire. WLVL. WBEN. Channels 2, 4, 7, Fox News, CNN. I'd do whatever I could to get them back ASAP. And because they're cute little blonde girls, I'd probably get the publicity I need. But what about everyone else? MC is right, probably 20 kids go missing every day. 19 of them are probably found later that day or the next day. But then there's that one ... and we don't hear about that one unless they're cute ... or their father's a successful businessman ... or there's some other compelling story to it. I actually think a "missing kids" channel isn't a bad idea. I don't want to go so far as to say that it isn't news, but I see MC's point. And based on the other posts, it seemed like he needed backup.  :)

SIDE NOTE - AlwaysWatching said: "I will not go out of the guidelines of this forum, so my oppinion of your views will stay with me." I don't want to discourage discussion ... and feel free to disagree on the issues ... and feel free to use each other's user names ... just don't resort to "personal" attacks. This message board is an extension of the show, to an extent ... and I don't like the idea of people hurling personal insults at one another and having my name attached to it.

I have spoken.   :)

Thanks -

Obviously I've touched a nerve here. Allow me to clarify...

Firstly, there are certain aspects of any event that makes it 'newsworthy,' one of which is proximity. Do you care about what the mayor of Seattle is doing, or what happened at the Lisbon town meeting last night? No, they are of no concern to anyone living in New York because they are thousands of miles away. But if the mayor of Lockport was attending the Lockport Town meeting, you might care a whole lot more. This is why you won't see Little Rock's police reports on CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews and all the others. Nobody else cares. Now, this child either ran away or was abducted in Florida. It is highly unlikely that anyone in New York saw it happen or knows where this little girl went. That is why I say it doesn't need to be repeated every 30 minutes on national news on every major news network. I certainly support running the story on local networks, and perhaps in the states surrounding Florida.

Also, don't think that I don't care about missing children. But ask yourself, why was this particular case highlighted? What made this girl so important and all the other missing children not worth CNN's time? She's just as important as any other kid out there. It's unfair and callous to ignore the plight of all the other missing kids. My suggestion about a missing persons network is not made out of inconvenience, I think it would be a huge help. They could display ongoing missing persons cases in between periodic highlighted cases based on proximity to certain regions, elasped time, etc.

Secondly, I'm the biggest proponent there is for free speech. I've defended all sorts of unsavory opinions based soley on the authors' right to express them. I myself have been the target of people trying to 'squelch' my free speech. But I'm not trying to censor the major news outlets, just make some sense of the topics they choose to highlight. There are big things going on all over the world. Landmark events are happening in this country. The middle east is transforming in front of our very eyes. Yet they chose to run the same 5 (and completely undeveloped) stories over and over and over. There should be an outlet for all news, but to make a towering mountain out of a molehill story is just lazy reporting. As a result, I exercised my freedom of choice and watched something else.

The Pope is "just another guy..."  Come on. Less Pope, more of what?

The Pope is just "like the Queen?" Which one? you didnt specifiy. Sweden? Swing?

England? Tootsy?

This is one odd ball place. And just another Kidnapping Channel...yeah, I'll tune in there exactly when someone's kid gets grabbed. What is that channel called? Should I point the TV antenna in the direction of the fleeing car?

Who would sponsor this channel, Mutual of Oh My God?

Seems everyone is forgetting when this happened to the Kenyon girl here in Lockport many years ago (about twenty). She got grabbed and they put the reports out as fast as they could back then. Unfortunately for the girl and her family, it wasn't fast enough. I don't think she came back--alive.

Maybe someone else remembers the details more clearly than me.

Too bad there wasn't an amber alert back then!

As the Bishop of the Buffalo Diocese I take great exception to these comments and postings!

While my heart is heavy, I can forgive and hope these opinions change.

It is apparant that some of your members and contributors are contradicting themselves. In a post about the girl in Florida, which is at the point I began to read this site for some Sunday Homily material,  I noticed the one member who now says that we should not care about news "thousands of miles away," was one of the first people to make comment about this subject happening to one of our own in Florida. Several comments were made.

Opinions should not change from page to page to fit the defiance.

I don't think the Kenyon girl was ever found. At 1 point she was thought to be in Mexico but that lead never paned out.

MC, Lets figure you out. You are definitely a very intelligent person, but your opinions are a little twisted. You have way too much time on your hands. You are jealous of successful people and blame all your problems on Republicans. You have no religious values from what you tell us even most atheists respect others religion leaders even if they don’t believe. You obviously don’t have kids or didn’t want them and left their mom. You seem like the type of person who gets off on other peoples despair and always have a negative opinion (you see the glass as half empty) I believe everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but that I am also entitled to disagree with it. If you weren’t so Back Asswards you would probably be a very rich and successful Republican. Did you also know that most atheist people ask for a priest on their death bed? Open your eyes and try to focus on the positive things in life. Life is to short to be miserable and blame everyone else for your problems. No one needs to be unemployed Burger King is higher right now. You need to turn off the news and watch cable or get a pet to help keep your mind off things. You know what they say wasting a Mind is a Crime.

I wouldn't say I'm jealous of succesful people, but I am disgusted with the ones who attain wealth and success by dishonest or selfish means. Such as any given CEO in this country. I may be envious of their lifestyle, but I don't despise them specifically because they're rich. I also never disrespected the Pope, or any other religious leader simply because I'm not religious myself. I just think no one has the right to be exhalted over another by the network broadcasts. The Pope is 'just another guy,' and I'm sure he would agree.

None of my problems are blamed on Republicans. I suppose I could generally blame Bush and his administration for driving this country into record debt and now I'll have to pay for it the rest of my life. But I know the source of most of my problems and I deal with them individually, I don't hold any one group responsible for all my woes.

What makes you think I'm a miserable, atheistic deadbeat-dad? Because I'm honest, because I call a spade a spade? I'm actually a very positive person. I offer constructive criticism whenever I can, and I can usually conjure ideas for improvement. I think if most of our 'leaders' lit a candle instead of cursing the darkness, we'd have fewer problems as a nation. But unless you identify problems you can't solve them. The truth is I don't have enough time on my hands, and could certainly use more, but because I'm self-employed, I don't technically have 'free time.' I also have plenty of values, but not necessarily religious ones. I have a pet. I have friends and see the lighter side of most things. I'm a good person, live by Commandments 4-10. Keep trying to figure me out, though, I'll let you know when you get close...

Oh, and I'd apply for a job at Burger King, but they don't hire college graduates because we're 'over-qualified.'

Your Mothers!!

No disrespect meant at all.

Everywhere you have said the Pope's name, you should replace that with your mothers name and see if anyone cares!  No disrespect at all. NICE COMMENTS--nope, no disrespect here.

First-He may care about your health. "Refusal to step down.." I wonder if this might have something to do with his leading spiritually until death-do-he-part. You know, something like that. Like breaking a vow, or showing your people that you are faithful until the very end. I LOVE IT that this old man gets up and goes to the window. IS there something WRONG WITH THAT??????

It IS disrespectful to suggest things or say that the Pope should step down--especially if you are not familiar with this religion. Personally, that offends me. What if I were to suggest that your Pastor, Rabbi or whatever--maybe, to eat ham. As a matter of fact, I think your Rabbi SHOULD EAT HAM...or your Lama!

And with regard to your fire Lockport Fire Department and Chaplans--

A one "L" Lama is the spiritual leader. A two "LL" Llama is a beast of burden. A three "LLL" LLLama-------is a pretty big fire! A nice clean joke you can tell in church...imagine that.

"...just don't resort to "personal" attacks."
LIKE THE PERSONAL ATTACKs ON A SICK POLISH MAN--The POPE?

LIKE THE OFFENSIVE PERSONAL ATTACK ON EVERY CATHOLIC THAT READS THIS?
"This message board is an extension of the show, to an extent ... and I don't like the idea of people hurling personal insults at one another and having my name attached to it."
BUT YOU WILL SAY THAT THE RELIGIOUS LEADER FOR MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IS WORTHLESS TO YOU AND ATTACH YOUR NAME TO THAT-YOUR SHOW AND STATION?

FOR THIS I appropriately curse you to have to stop at every WAFFLE House on the East Coast--on your next trip to Florida, cause I "kind of agree with writer number one..."  "But caller number three has some very good points too..."  "And while I'm tailoring my individual responses to appease as many of you as I can.."  "I certainly wouldn't want to offend the majority...unless of course I change my mind like the wind.."

Some of you are done...please flip over for even cooking. The maple syrup's in the jug.

Wow. This thread is all over the place ... and I'm fairly certain it's beyond saving.

To all you anonymous posters: You're welcome to post anonymously, but sign it in some manner, please. "Person X" ... or "FriendofthePope" or something. So that when you post twice we can figure out the logic of the thread. It's better and easier if you sign up and log in, but you don't have to.

Obviously, I'm not Catholic. And it may shock a lot of Catholics to find out that they non-Catholic world (at least those that I know) doesn't put much stock in the Pope. I have nothing against the man ... but I stick by my earlier statement about him being similar to the queen (and I meant of England, BTW) ... He doesn't affect me. That's not meant to be a put down - just a statement.

As for my statement that he should step down - I truly don't understand how that's offensive to anyone. Other popes in history have stepped down and given the papalcy (is that spelled right?) up to someone with more control over their faculties. Back to "Obviously, I"m not Catholic." Maybe someone could explain to me why it's important for the pope to be pope until he dies, cause I just don't get it.

If people had spent time trying to explain their points of view rather than flaming each other and threatening to tell the Bishop, we would have better understanding. What a concept. But I fear that people don't want understanding. They want to be free to hate people. Cause that's what Jesus said we should do. (Please note: sarcasm in use)

And on the note of flaming ... I said earlier to talk about issues and not make it personal ... there have been several posts on this thread that haven't listened to me (which makes me think my kids are posting) ... but if I delete those comments, the thread won't make any sense. I must, however, especially condemn the "little boys" post. That's just wrong and insensative.

Another note ... someone said something about cursing me to stop at every Waffle House between here and Florida? Clever. But are you trying to say it's bad to see other points of view? The only thing in life that I know 100 percent is that I don't know everything. The world isn't black and white ... and I won't pretend it is when I can clearly see shades of gray.

That's all for now.

Have fun.

If the Pope wants to stay in office until he's an invalid, fine. It might be interesting to wait until he's got a feeding tube and see where the church really stands on euthanasia. I honestly hope the Pope is feeling much better. I don't care if wants to stay Pope forever. As I said, it doesn't affect me one way or the other. My point is that his illness is not news. My grandfather was a very sick, polish man as well. Do you remember when he was in the news? No? hmmm...

"That the ONLY TWO PEOPLE in this post thread that used those little icon things, what are they called, Emoicons(?) Smily Faces, has been Mindcrime and the person who left that totally unacceptable comment about boys and the dying Pope. What an arse! Do you think we're stupid or blind?" Mr. Anonymous: If you're trying to imply that because of the smiley face, I made the 'little boys' comment, (which WAS innappropriate), then I can fairly attribute every comment in this thread to YOU, because they're all signed the same. Isn't it odd that most people won't sign their name to what they are obviously quite passionate about? And for the record, I'll use all the emoticons I want. They're very facilitating when it comes to expression of a sentiment, or puncuating an written expression.

So there

Again Scott, point taken. I was the first post to respond to this topic; I won’t apologize for my opinion. I am Catholic, but did not comment on that aspect of the posting. If you go back and look my complaint was with what I perceive as a caviler attitude for missing children. I was extremely offended, still am.

If people don’t want to hear a play by play of the Pope’s recovery or relapse, so be it. Turn the channel or go fill you coffee cup. But let’s at least try to show a small amount of respect and compassion. Millions of people turn into the news station for all kinds of reasons, this being one of them. You can’t cater to everyone.

News coverage is not always fair for these missing children, but look how far it has come. I stand firm to my opinion of plaster every photo and description on every venue available. It is remote that a child from Florida would turn up in NY, but it is possible. Leave every stone unturned. MC feels it is not fair to the other 19, and he would be correct. It is the best system we have right now. Use that injustice to help the other 19 instead of not doing everything possible for the one. The amber alert system is working.

The smile safe kids program is a great effort to locate kids fast. This is an ID card provided by some children’s photographers. This program is a national data base of current pictures. A parent can call a toll free number to report a child missing and within minutes have that child’s photo sent to all law enforcement and media. If MC wants to help the other 19 go to www.missingkids.com and see what they can do. But please don’t begrudge the child that got news coverage.

This is my opinion on the subject, and I am sticking with it.

Because of the Bush economy, I have a lot of time on my hands and I often spend it listening to the news, as I'm sure many of you do as well.
I love how people constantly blame others for their woes. The nice part about a TV is they all have an off button. If we do not like what we are seeing on the news we have the choice to turn it off. Perhaps some time spent studying a viable new skill that will assist in developing your business or help to attain a new career.
Alwayswatching made some very good points. I agree that all of the children that are abducted should be plastered all over the news. Amber alert is a wonderful thing and as a parent I will never complain about an interruption for a missing child.
Are we really so self involved that we believe that whenever we turn on the news all of the stories should meet our personal interests. There are nearly a Billion people that are concerned over the health of the pope. The only way to voice your concern over these dreadful interruptions is to simply tune out. The internet is a great way to find all of the specific news you are looking for without interruption. Streaming video based on articles of your choice will never be preempted.
What I find alarming is how condescending many of the posts on this site sound. I appreciate others opinions and enjoy creative debate. As a matter of fact everything I know is based on something I have learned from someone else. I understand that some of the fluff on the news may not be important to me. I.e. the rich guy flying around the world. However this story may inspire others. They may look towards the challenge of developing more fuel efficient combustion engines so they can be on the news.
It really comes down to our choices. Some of us choose to complain that the news is filled with fluff and topics that don’t interest us while others may seek an alternate venue to obtain their information. Some will choose to point the finger at the Bush administration and blame them for all of their personal short falls. I choose to focus on the things I have control over and will excel in this tumultuous environment.
I will choose, if given the choice, to invest my Social Security money in my own personal retirement account. I believe I have a better chance of taking care of myself than relying on the government. I believe that everyone that invests into social security should get a check after they retire regardless of their current economic standing. People seem to forget that social security is a TAX. Denying people THEIR money that they paid into the system there entire lives is ridiculous. Why should they be punished for being well invested? I grew up in a project as poor as you can be as a resident of this state. I started investing at a young age and taught myself the skills I need to succeed in a global economy. I plan to use my social security check to make the payment on my BMW and perhaps throw the rest at a charity of my choice. These tax dollars are mine and I will use them as I see fit despite the fact I will have a 7 figure savings.
I agree that free speech applies even if we don’t agree. I will even say that I am sure I can learn something from everyone here (even you Mindcrime). I hope everyone can stay civil and we don’t resort to childish attacks on other peoples beliefs simply because we don’t agree with them.

I recognize that independent news organizations can broadcast whatever they like. That's their perrogative. But if they're going to call what they broadcast NEWS, it should be NEWS. Not uninformative fluff. They should call themselves something else then...And I usually DO excercise my freedom of choice and tune out, but I listen to the news as background noise while I work. I enjoy hearing about current events, debates, political goings on, etc. News about the pope is fine. If they have footage about the pope being wheeled into surgery, or waving at the crowd, great. But I noted a 27 minute segment on the pope where the predominant live coverage was a camera pointed at the side of building. You couldn't see through the windows. You couldn't even tell if it a hospital. This is not NEWS. It's a web cam. And it was on ALL the news stations.

And it happened again last night...I taped a relevant, newsworthy program. When I went to watch the tape this morning, 4 minutes into the program there was a Breaking News Flash interrupting the show. (Mind you this was at 2:04 in the morning.) Apparently, Martha Freaking Stuart was getting OUT of prison, and for the next 53 minutes, we had to watch either "Live Footage Of The Gate," or "Live Footage Of The Plane." Nothing happened while we watched The Live Gate or The Live Plane. Occasionally a car would drive out of The Gate, or a luggage train would scoot past The Plane. Finally, a split second of Martha caught on film as she's rushed from her car to The Plane. The Plane flew away. They showed The Plane repeatedly taking off for another 5 minutes. As the Breaking News Flash ended, my show resumed with the message, "If you would like to comment on what we discussed here tonight, please visit our website at...." The entire program was eclipsed by repetitive footage of The Gate and The Plane.

PLEASE, remember that I started this thread not to attack groups, but to vent my frustration with broadcast 'news' stations. Was uneventful footage of The Gate and The Plane worth it? How much money did they spend on photographers, camera crews and reporters who stood in the cold in front of still objects and reported that "nothing is happening" repeatedly? How many people who tuned in to see a relevant, timely and important program are dissappointed now because of Martha's escape? This kind of coverage is worth it if The Alaskan Pipeline is bombed or the President is shot. But a 'B' list psuedo-celebrity should not be worth an hour of wasted news time.

I think most people in this country are getting a raw deal from the Bush economy. Whether you agree with Dubya or his party's views, there are many aspects of our country that are undeniably worse off. Blaming Bush for some things is entirely fair and not out of place.

What specific areas of the country do you feel are worse off? What would you do differently? Please be specific and recognize what can really be done. Can you really blame the Bush Administration for your current problems or can the blame be directed at our own bad decisions and choices? My portfolio is doing quite well under this administration and my company is performaing exceptionally well.

lessee, we're in debt up to our eyeballs, and we're in a bloody and senseless war, and its not for the good of anyone but americans who have 'portfolios.'  as a result, we are a national disgrace and laughing stock.  to top it off, we are now even more hated by the people who, before the iraq invasion, only hated us enough to attack major buildings with hijacked airplanes. now they must really be displeased with us... plus i'll have to work until i'm dead because i'll have no social security when the stock market crashes and everyone's 'personal accounts' become as worthless as my merrill lynch 401k did last year

all of these are directly related to bush and people just like him.  he has not helped regular americans, only furthered the cause of big businesses and enriched his corporate 'base.'  this is not the job he was hired to do.  these are poor results and he is in the position of responsibility.  everything he touches turns to crap.  he shoud step down while there's still time to save what's left of this country.

i would offer these starting suggestions:

1) eliminate the political party system. it only serves to divide us and our representatives are incapable of action. without constant partisan bickering, progress is assured.  and boot the electoral college while we're at it

2) reform health care, it's in far more dire need of fixing than the illusionary social security 'crisis.'  unified health care works far more efficiently than our disastrous example has shown

3) concentrate every military resource in the middle east to actually hunting bin laden, maybe then you'll find him.  we have the most sophistiacted intelligence, technology and resources in the world, and we can't find one guy in 3 1/2 years? we're not trying
