Ariane 5 wraps up a successful year with another on-target mission

Ariane 5 completed a busy year of launch operations today with its fifth successful flight of 2006, orbiting two American built-satellite passengers for U.S. telecommunications operators.
The heavy-lift Ariane 5 lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana right on time at 7:08 p.m. (22h08 GMT) and released its WildBlue-1 and AMC-18 payloads into geostationary transfer orbit during a 32-minute mission.
With tonight's launch, Arianespace's workhorse Ariane 5 orbited a total of 10 primary satellites and one auxiliary passenger during 2006, lofting more than 36,600 metric tons of commercial payloads since January 1.
In addition, the Starsem affiliate of Arianespace orbited one satellite this year using a Soyuz ST vehicle launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome, and another Soyuz Starsem mission is planned for December 27.

The Launch Readiness Review (RAL) took place in Kourou on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 and authorised count-down operations for the WildBlue-1 & AMC 18 launch.
For its fifth launch of the year Arianespace will boost two communications satellites into orbit: WildBlue-1 for American operator WildBlue Communications, and AMC-18 for SES Americom. Arianespace’s selection by a new American operator and the largest private satellite operator in the United States is clear international recognition of this top-quality launch service.
It will be launched from the Ariane launch complex N° 3 (ELA3), in Kourou, French Guiana.

The ARIANE 5 "ECA" launcher lift-off for this Flight is scheduled within the following launch window:

GMT: Between 10:08 pm and 10:51 pm on December 8, 2006.
PARIS: Between 11:08 pm and 11:51 pm on December 8, 2006.
WASHINGTON: Between 05:08 pm and 05:51 pm on December 8, 2006.
KOUROU: Between 07:08 pm and 07:51 pm on December 8, 2006.

The first ever Manx satellite will be launched into space early next month by the satellite leasing arm of SES Global.
The leasing company set up in Athol Street late last year, but SES Global already has a fleet of 44 satellites in orbit.
The Isle of Man operation covers seven satellites, two already in orbit and five under construction. These are all designed for lease to operating companies within the SES Global group, this is the first to be launched since the Manx operation began last year.
Launch of the satellite will take place at the Arianespace spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana on December 8.
