And the Daily Mail is claiming that these are "never before seen" colour photos of Flanders. Even allowing for the quality of Autochrome, I'm not absolutely convinced they're not hand-coloured, but here they are:

The photo of the German machine gunners is a composite. The colouring of the photos is rather nicely done (although the feldgrau seems a bit off).

Oh, good spot. I'll write to the Daily Mail and they're bound to clarify matters. You know how they hate to print anything that isn't true . . .

At WHSmith I found an interesting magazine: "PASSCHENDAELE  THE BATTLE NINETY YEARS ON" (ISBN 184415528 - 5, GB£6.99).

Under "Acknowledgments" it's stated "This magazine has been published by Wharncliffe Magazines in association with Pen and Sword Military Books Limited, with the purpose of creating an awarness and an interest in the Battle of Passchendaele, 1917."

On the cover is the mark "Exclusive to WHSmith".

In this magazine one can find about 50 coloured pictures of the Battle of Passchendaele. The photographs mentioned in this thread are in the magazine, too.

Some photographs show a remarkably good quality. I haven't read the magazine yet but at the end of the book - pages 96/97 - there are 8 photographs under the title "THE PASSCHENDAELE EXPERIENCE". The caption reads: "Photographs coloured by Jon Wilkinson".

Is this person a wartime photographer/ colourist or is he a modern time computer specialist?
