Veteran Returns to Flanders & "Colour Photos"

Harry Patch has been back to Passchendaele, 90 years later:

And the Daily Mail is claiming that these are "never before seen" colour photos of Flanders. Even allowing for the quality of Autochrome, I'm not absolutely convinced they're not hand-coloured, but here they are:

The photo of the German machine gunners is a composite. The colouring of the photos is rather nicely done (although the feldgrau seems a bit off).

Oh, good spot. I'll write to the Daily Mail and they're bound to clarify matters. You know how they hate to print anything that isn't true . . .

At WHSmith I found an interesting magazine: "PASSCHENDAELE  THE BATTLE NINETY YEARS ON" (ISBN 184415528 - 5, GB£6.99).

Under "Acknowledgments" it's stated "This magazine has been published by Wharncliffe Magazines in association with Pen and Sword Military Books Limited, with the purpose of creating an awarness and an interest in the Battle of Passchendaele, 1917."

On the cover is the mark "Exclusive to WHSmith".

In this magazine one can find about 50 coloured pictures of the Battle of Passchendaele. The photographs mentioned in this thread are in the magazine, too.

Some photographs show a remarkably good quality. I haven't read the magazine yet but at the end of the book - pages 96/97 - there are 8 photographs under the title "THE PASSCHENDAELE EXPERIENCE". The caption reads: "Photographs coloured by Jon Wilkinson".

Is this person a wartime photographer/ colourist or is he a modern time computer specialist?

I hope this helps a little!
Regards
Thomas

Now here's a funny thing. I posted a comment on the Daily Mail website, pointing out that the pic of the Germans was a fake. The next day it had disappeared. So I posted it again. It disappeared again. However, now the picture itself has gone. Who would have thought the Daily Mail would behave like that?

There is this, from the story about Harry P:

Mr Patch was also shown a recently discovered panoramic photograph of the fields taken in 1917.

There is a Jon Wilkinson who does illustrations and maps for military publishers, and the spelling is quite modern for WW1, so I suspect it's him.

Watches are a beautiful thing. Certainly, they tell us the time - but aren't they so much more than that? replicas watches Through their watches, a person can express so much, and in a way it could be said:replicas watches Show me your watch and I'll tell you who you are.

You all may have noticed, but that article is from '07.  Harry Patch passed on 25 July, 2009. I saved the news clipping. Please see attachment.

I know, Oscar. I posted this at the time. The reason the post has reappeared is that it's been spammed. Pleased to hear you took an interest in Harry.

Still plenty of beer here.

Of course, after five years in East Anglia I quite took a liking to the natives (except that one lorry driver who spat out his window at me when he saw I was wearing US camo driving home one day after work!) biggrin. Not too mention profound respect for those who serve(d) their country. You hate to see national treasures go. I remember the interview of him shortly before he passed. I'm not sure if I was shocked at the fact that any were still alive (before he passed) or the fact that they were all gone afterwards. Humble chap he was.

Anyways, I figured the majority knew it was a few years old, but since I save pdf's of noteworthy news items I figured it was a good opportunity to put one of my files to use.

Come on, I know at least a few of you saved the pdf evileye.

cheers!

Far as the ale goes, be sure not to drink it all, because I'd like to come back some day!
