Vladuz ~ Hacker? Folk Hero? Comic Book Villan? Voodoo Drums echo

Very interesting.
The Lady Penelope Extra Stories

Lady Penelope fights the power of voodoo in...
Voodoo Drums

Vladuz, Scientist-in-Chief of Bereznik, who alone has used voodoo to control the natives and build the base undetected. His Conqueror rocket will rain down micro-projectiles that will destroy whole cities. With Penelope and Parker prisoner, he reveals he intercepted the transmission from Jeff Tracy, and knew they were coming. The situation seems hopeless, but Penelope gets Parker to beat on the drum near his feet, breaking the spell holding the natives. In the confusion, Vladuz is knocked out by Penelope when she topples her chair into him, freeing her in the process. Calling Jeff Tracy for assistance to destroy the base, and rescue, their mission is accomplished.

Pretty in Pink: Is Ebay's Vladuz a Folk Hero?
Although other users eventually warmed to a ‘German’ poster, he initially received a less than friendly welcome the other night on this eBay Inc auction site forum http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jspa?threadID=1000442423&start=320 where Vladuz (posing as a Pink) enjoyed a far less hostile reception from the posters on the US forum when he entertained everyone the previous evening (middle of the night for the Europeans).

He first posted with the username (undefined) and then as dr._fraud who picked up the conversation where the first had left off. Now, this much is clear, the Undefined Dr Fraud character certainly was posting as if he was Vladuz the Romanian hacker but can we be certain it was Vladuz?

In famous cases of murder etc the police will confirm that there are invariably some characters who will claim responsibility merely to obtain the ‘fame and notoriety’ which accompany the confession. Was this someone who would like to be caught for the ‘crime’ of exposing the security holes of the eBay system or was this really Vladuz, attempting to cover his tracks.
I’m interested in the psychology behind these reactions. It appears that a Romanian hacker challenging eBay’s security is a romantic image to many - some have even been accused in the forum of turning him into some kind of folk hero - a German offering opinions can take them, and his thesaurus, elsewhere.

If it was Vladuz in the forum yesterday, was the conversation merely a whole school of red herring (accompanied by ‘Ghost Rider’ clips on his ME pages) is he in Germany or is he really in the USA? Is he about to go on the run? If, as many people believe, he has not only hacked into eBay but has used the facilities he accessed to scam people out of huge sums of money, he should certainly have the funds to go wherever he chooses.

If an impostor then it was a clever attempt, neither of the Ids used appeared to be new, both are registered as Member since: May-27-03 Location: Germany. Was it he or not? We may never know.

If Vladuz is going on the run will this be the last we hear from him? Or does he have a grand finale up his sleeve for the eBay forums?

If the latter then it would be useful to know what part of eBay Inc’s network he will post the finale on or we may miss having any sight of it - maybe there is a reason why he has been posting on various countries’ forums, perhaps he is assessing where best to release the final episode before he disappears forever, in which country will it remain longest before being pulled from the boards.

We await the next episode in this ongoing saga with keen interest, it is now turning into an almost nightly soap opera and yet eBay Inc seem impotent in the face of it.

Dont look now, but I believe some folks have been alienated by ebaY and their practices, along with obvious PR and responsible disclosure blunders. (I meant irresponsible)

If Vladuz wanted t go legit right now with anything, I bet he would have some ready-made customers.

I don't know where all you may read, but I believe he may even be more knowledgable and helpful to some ebaYers than some ebaY customer reps have been

Why, of course he is. eBaY thinks people are basically good. LOL! He's at least proving otherwise.

Things seemed to converge this week on the security front, with three separate incidents worrying eBay users.

An alleged fraudster using the name Vladuz accessed a handful of eBay customer service reps' email accounts and taunted eBay on discussion boards.

An eBay vendor left customer information on publicly accessible pages on its site.

And reports of a large amount of eBay account hijackings made it into the press (the Mirror) and have been circulating among eBayers.

People usually speculate that eBay has been hacked when they see account takeovers - also known as hijackings, particularly on a large scale like the one referenced in the Mirror article above. But as long as fraudsters use social engineering techniques to trick people into revealing their passwords, there isn't a need for them to hack into eBay's databases.

Now, fraudsters are committing phishing on larger scale through "pharming" attacks. Pharming occurs when people are redirected to scam site set up to harvest passwords or install malware on the victims' computers such as key-loggers. And in fact, InfoWorld reports that a large-scale pharming attack occurred last week and targeted 65 financial targets, including eBay and PayPal.

What's perhaps most frustrating to users is the feeling that eBay keeps them in the dark about incidents, leading to feeling of distrust and cynicism. eBay executives are probably just as frustrated, feeling they know how best to protect users and wanting to limit information available to fraudsters.

Communication is key in any relationship. eBay now has a place where they can speak to users directly - quickly and without the public-relations spin that is the norm for corporations. The eBay Chatter [ http://www.ebaychatter.com/ ] blog could be a supplement to eBay's Town Hall meetings where eBay executives speak one-on-one with users. This week, eBay used the Chatter blog to clear up some misperceptions about a Wall Street analyst report to great effect.

These days, users can react immediately to events, such as last night's reappearance of Vladuz on eBay Germany's discussion boards. They can use forums, blogs, and even videos on YouTube to "self publish." This opens up a new challenge to the public relations industry in every field. It will be interesting to see how corporations, including eBay, meet this challenge in a new Web 2.0 world.

eBay has stepped up the censoring of their "Community Discussion Boards" by removing even more posts about the Vladuz issue and have started suspending member.

I just got notice that I (eBay user ID: Firemeg) have been suspended from the eBay forums for 7 days. I also just got an email from another user who had also been suspended for 7 days.

So what horrific thing did I post?

eBay user ID: Firemeg suspended for 7 days for exercising "right" to Free Speech....

I feel as though Vladuz is ONE , may TWO videos away from being seen as a hero to MANY
as ebaY continues to censor threads and belittle IT's members
