Hi Everyone. Well, after 15 years the RV-Dreams Community Forum is coming to an end. Since it began in August 2005, we've had 58 Million page views, 124,000 posts, and we've spent about $15,000 to keep this valuable resource for RVers free and open. But since we are now off the road and have settled down for the next chapter of our lives, we are taking the Forum down effective June 30, 2021. It has been a tough decision, but it is now time.

We want to thank all of our members for their participation and input over the years, and we want to especially thank those that have acted as Moderators for us during our amazing journey living and traveling in our RV and growing the RV-Dreams Family. We will be forever proud to have been founders of this Forum and to have been supported by such a wonderful community. Thank you all!!

RV terminology

1) ATV= all terrain vehicle

2) Blue Boy:Many boondockers find that using a portable waste water holding tank, typically called a "blue boy," (it has wheels on the bottom), is just the answer to leaving the RV in place, while still toting ‘that old black or grey water’ to the dump station.

3)Boondocking:One dictionary defines boondocks as slang for rough backwoods or bush country. The term "boondocking" is synonymous with "dispersed camping" or "dry camping" and is used to describe camping in the midst of nature without the use of commercial campgrounds and hookups.

4) BLM =Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, administers 262 million surface acres of America's public lands, located primarily in 12 Western States. The BLM sustains the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for  the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

5) COE= Army Corps of Engineers Camps (ACE): The Army Corps of Engineers are familiar to most of us from their involvement in dam construction to control river flows, build lake reservoirs, and produce hydroelectric power. Part of their charter is to also open up these river and lakeside areas to the public and provide recreation opportunities for fishing, boating, and camping.

6) CCC =Cargo Carrying Capacity. Is equal to GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) minus the actual shipping weight of the RV (dry weight), add back in the weight of fresh water in the tank and hot water heater, the weight of propane in the tank, and the weight of fuel. This remainder is the amount leftover for all your stuff and people you can legally and safely carry in your RV.

7) DH = Dear Husband, or ?

8)DW = Dear Wife ,Darling wife ( no other variations on this one)

9) Dinghy: The vehicle that you are towing with your motorhome. Also called a Toad this is what motorhome campers use as local transportation while your motorhome is parked at a campground. Most people will tow a vehicle that gets good mileage so to minimize expenses on fuel ,when visiting the surrounding area attractions.

10) Dump Station: A location for emptying your black water and gray water holding tanks(dumping). This may be at your campsite with a sewer hookups, or a dumpsite designated by the RV park or other camping site, and sometimes you can find specially designated dump sites at highway rest stops or at certain fuel stops.

11)Full Hookup:The ability to connect your electric, water, and sewer at the campsite.

12) HDT = Heavy Duty Truck, commercial diesel rig (like you see hauling the big trailers) converted to use as a towing vehicle for larger trailers and fifth wheels.

13) MTD = Medium Duty Truck, another commercial truck only smaller than the HDT, also converted for pulling larger trailers and fifthwheels.

14) TV = Tow vehicle

15) HONEY WAGON = Mobile service that charges a small fee to stop by your RV and unload your Black and Grey holding tanks. These services are usually found at Rallies held on BLM land (example: Quartzite AZ)

When I am troubled as to whether something is a TLA (three letter acronym) or a TLA (two letter acronym) I turn to  http://www.acronymfinder.com for help! I also keep http://www.webster.com in my favorites as well.

Can be very handy...

Ken & Cindy,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this little glossary.  I'm sure our newbies, and quite a few oldbies, will find it very helpful.
