Special report the development of Souphanouvong University in Luang Prabang (Photos) !!!
A Korean investor aims to develop Souphanouvong University in Luang Prabang province into one of the best universities in Laos and the Southeast Asian region.
A Korean contractor, POSDATA consortium, has set up an Economic Development Cooperation Fund loan through the Korean government, with which it will manage the university for the next 30 years in collaboration with the Lao government.
As a part of these plans, 21 teachers and 29 administration staff from the university departed on Friday for training in the Republic of Korea. The teachers will undertake training at Woosong University and Kangwon National University for five months and administration staff will attend Jeonju University for a one month course.
Teachers will learn how to develop a curriculum and textbooks, establish research projects and develop their teaching skills to suit students’ needs. They will also be educated in the teaching of tourism, business administration, IT business management, international business management, electronic engineering, computer engineering, agronomy, animal husbandry, forest resources and architecture.
Administration staff will be trained to manage the university’s operations, and to provide staff and vocational training.
Project Coordinator of POSDATA consortium, Mr Park Gibong, added that a further six teachers would soon be sent to Korea for similar training.
“In my opinion, certain sections of the university will be better than other universities in Laos in every possible way in the next ten years,” he said. Five Korean universities will work alongside Souphanouvong University, including Woosong, Kangwon, Jeonju, Korea polytechnic and DIA.
The Director of Synergy Vision Inc (a member of the POSDATA consortium), Mr Kim Keenam, is in charge of Expert Works and Fellowship Training at the Luang Prabang National University Establishment Project. He said the training course would be invaluable for the improvement of the university when the staff returned and put what they had learned into practice.
Executive Consultant of the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training, Dr Chang Jisoon, explained that the Lao Ministry of Education believed they could learn from the Korean education system, which the ministry considers to be a key factor in the successful economic development of Korea. Having seen Korea’s success over the past 40 years, the Lao government now want s their help in upgrading human resources.

Souphanouvong University was established in 2003 in order to provide higher education to students in the eight northern provinces. Currently, over 2,000 students are enrolled at the university, with 116 teachers working in the four main faculties of science, education, economics and agriculture.
Last year the Lao government provided US$28.4 million, largely consisting of a US$22.7 million loan from the Republic of Korea, for new buildings and equipment and training for the university’s teachers and staff, to develop the curriculum and hire experts to assist in this process.
The university will also open seven new faculties and will be able to enrol more students at the start of the next academic year. Consequently, it is hoped that a further 1,800 students will soon be able to study there.
The university held a farewell party for their staff in Luang Prabang on Thursday, which was attended by the Director of the Higher Technical and Vocational Education Department, Professor Dr Kongsy Sengmany, and the President of the University, Dr Khamphay Sisavanh.

Does anyone know how far or how many kilometers from the University to the center of town? Looking at the photos, the campus must be in between hills.

LAO SPY wrote: I agreed to say National University if this University provides for students from everywhere in Laos. If it provides only the Northern of Laos that can't say National because National is only whole country not other countries that is conversely International which provides for students every where in the world can join I think later will have International Class which provides for foreign students to study in Laos so, I would like to suggest who will study here should know more about Lao culture, tradition and society because, foreign students aim to study here so as to know more Lao culture, traditional and society not only graduate and next to improved our strong English in order to disseminate beautifully lao culture, tradition and society to people around the world.
