OK so this is news....

Wondering if there's a connection to the Pulp reunion? Could they be headlining together for something big? The Blur reunion thing has been making mild waves since a few days ago on various popular media outlets.

Any theories?

I was under the impression that blur weren't too happy with Pulp back in the day thinking Pulp weren't particularly grateful for the support slots like Villa Leisure Centre in 1994. Alex James said Pulp members were in their birds knickers and never had a kind word for them. And I don't believe there has been collaboration since between any members. A Scott Walker show in 2008 which Damon Albarn and Jarvis both featured is all I am aware of.

I think it is just coincidence.  I don't think they will headline together.

I hope not. Jarvis rightly hates the Br*tpop word as he now refers to it textually. This would just fly in the face of that.

Pulp can reunite and do headline shows in their own right, they don't need their old associates to prop them up.

Also, Parklife won't be 30 til 2024, Pulp's pension-boosting shows will take place before that.

I meant maybe there's some upcoming big secret Wembley event as Wembley was mentioned as the Blur thing, or some big various artists thing like scales of Live Aid or some big tribute thing, or Wembley deal ...not that pulp need blur. Never meant that at all. On that topic, I'd think it'd be the other way around lol. Blur would need pulp. Pulps better, more in demand to reform and just...really above and beyond blur on various levels. At least in my opinion.

Or maybe whoever or whatever offered blur this option is behind the Pulp one. Yet separate. To give more insight into maybe what perhaps inspired the reunion. Could be connected in terms of a promoter or surrounding an isolated event gig.

Just looking for clues was all.

But yeah, never once meant Pulp need Blur. Anyone who'd think that they do would be an idiot or a very very casual, out of the loop fan, honestly.

But might be whatever instigated the Pulp reunion might be in some way connected , even if loosely  to the blur thing or some big event gig like a charity gig or various artists thing and they were maybe to both equally headline as two big reunion gigs. Like pink Floyd etc did for Live 8 ..the 2005 version of Live Aid.

Intriguing stuff. I'm not sure Blur would be too enamoured of Britpop branding either, but some kind of uber-90s event would break people's minds. God forbid those Gallagher brothers have sorted their differences too. Rope-in Supergrass and Suede. Would I buy a ticket, for a hypothetical festival straight out of '95, if it were remotely affordable? Yes. Would I like myself for doing so? Well no, not really. But hey, you can't buy credibility

I would buy a ticket for that sort of uber-90s festival even if it was unaffordable.

I have been to Stone Valley for the uber-late-70s festival with precious few original members in the bands  so this would probably be more credible.  And did consider the Fields of Gold festival next weekend with fake oasis, fake stone roses, fake happy mondays, fake smiths, fake new order and fake james. Which I guess means my credibility is totally shot smile

PS Fields of Gold festival would have been a freebie and I already have Divine Comedy to watch in London that evening.  But next year

Am I making it up or were Pulp genuinely annoyed with Blur for 'copying' them. I thought I heard an interview where Jarvis and Russell talk about Boys and Girls being a rip off of one of theirs?

Russell mentions them quite a bit in his book, always respectfully - often admiringly. There's a long section in Chapter 19 about their first tour with Blur where Russell reckons that Graham Coxon said "We like your band, were going to copy you"; and that Stephen Street said of Girls & Boys, "I know weve kind of stolen your clothes with this one."

And to some extent they had, it was very Pulpy. The queasy disco beat on the octaves was very reminiscent of our disco period from La Cigale. But then we'd nicked it from Blondie and New Order, who nicked it from Divine, who'd probably nicked it from the Venerable Bede. Pulp had even more influences than Blur but ours melded into something that passed for originality. I was jealous to death that Blur had had the balls to be that cheesy and still stay cool. To walk the tightrope of absurdity and get away with it we needed more courage and better producers. No more hiding behind being meaningful, clever and indie: go for the raw pop nerve and have a hit - yes, we learned a lot from Blur.

He briefly says "Wed been invited to join Blur in their dressing room for a drink (...) We thought we were better than them and they thought, with some truth, that we were a bunch of weirdoes who were best avoided." But that's followed with a lot of qualifiers about how much they got along and hung out together subsequently.

Also, weren't Blur petty & diva-ish on that a/f/m tour, complaining that Pulp shared their rider?

Don't know where I remember that from - maybe it was in Russell's book.

I'm paraphrasing, but I think the quote went along the lines of "Pulp were actually worse than Oasis. Oasis would be like (crap Manchester accent) "I'm gonna shag your bird. I'm gonna shag your bird", whereas Pulp would just do it & you'd find out three weeks later".

That's as best I can remember it anyways!

Blur doing a "one-off" UK date at Wembley stadium next summer. Let's hope they keep it that way and not steal Pulp's thunder!

Suspect blur will probably play Glastonbury and other dates.  Unlikely to be going to Wembley to see them unless I get a bargain ticket nearer the time.  I did go to see The Who a while back, but it's too big a venue for a decent gig.  Even the O2 is too big for me.  At least I should be able to get somewhere near the stage at Finsbury Park.

Of course, if Oasis declared a gig at the O2 on the same night we could go full-95

It's being quite definitively reported that it's Blur's only UK gig next year, which is a shame. I've always gone to their smaller warm-up gigs.
