I was wondering about this earlier.

Ithink many fans would pick one of three songs - 'Sheffield: Sex City', 'This Is Hardcore', or 'Common People'. Or maybe they'd opt for Different Class as a whole, or His 'n' Hers. Or 'Babies'.

My favourite Pulp production - well, that's something else entirely. Completely different question. It could be 'Lipgloss' or 'Like A Friend', or the sleeve of the Babies single, or the moment during the otherwise-poor 'Common People' video where Jarvis does that funky little bowed leg-kick, like a chicken performing at a seventies disco.

But for me, Pulp's masterpiece would have to exemplify the band at their best. A fantastic song, poppy without being pop-oriented, hewn from then-Pulp template but stronger, built out of sweeping synths and propulsive rhythm, festooned with wonderful, true-pop guitar lines, simple and complex at the same time. It would be something of singular and special emotional resonance, evoking a powerful sense of wistfulness and yearning, featuring the artistic contributions of all six key Pulps in their heyday, with lyrics reflecting Jarvis's fascination on sex, coupledom and love, suffused with nostalgia and retro, bygone times. And it would have a sonic momentum all of its own, with a video that reflected these things too.

For me, 'Do You Remember the First Time?' has a claim to be their real highlight; the best thing they ever did.

But my opinion is irrelevant: what would you pick?

Their real masterpiece, in my opinion, is the This Is Hardcore LP, and the song itself, its a flawless production

If they had recorded "Glory Days" in 1998 with all the energy it had when they performed it the other week...

It's too hard to choose but I'd pick "This is Hardcore" for the video. I'm edging towards "Lipgloss" but ask me tomorrow and I'll say something totally different.

Am I the only one who loves the Separations and Gift period best, along with It?

Surely not. Well, certainly Seppy and Intro, anyhow.

It's staggering what they achieved with so little moolah (primarily through Russell getting himself into debt).

It may seem strange to talk of Death and then Lighthouses

But it's not strange to me

Wickerman. Beautifully evocative poetry set to a truly cinematic soundtrack, justifiably the centrepiece of an incredible album that never got the kudos it deserved. The sound of a band maturing like a fine wine, underpinned by the genius of Scott Walker as producer.

Finally seeing them play it live at Brixton in 2011 was a huge moment for me. I know many gig-goers just want to hear 'the bops' from the mid-90s but what a treat it would be to hear it played again in 2023, especially with the Elysian Collective in support. I can dream...

Oh, yes, Wickerman - a delightful piece of poetry - and Owen Hatherley describes it as being like a final run-through of their old haunts... the "pudgy fifteen year-olds" of Deep-Fried in Kelvin, the "buds that explode at the slightest touch" surrounding the riverside of David's Last Summer, the "pensioners gathering dust" the same elderly who clacked their tongues in disapproval in Sheffield: Sex City, lots of stuff like that. In a way, it's all of their epics rolled into one.

The Sisters EP.

One of the finest records ever produced by any band, full stop. Not a dull moment to he had.

His N' Her's (The Song) is up there for me. It distills a lot of what I find quintessential about the band into one long masterpiece.

Mainly though I have Sunrise in my head for this - those buildups that break out into the glorious instrumental passages are just so triumphant and massive, witnessing them live the other week just solidified it for me. What a way to end their final album on.
