SUMMER LEAGUE STARTS AFTER EASTER

Please note that the dates are yet to be confirmed.

We are an amateur basketball league with three years experience of organising competitions in London. We had 254 players registered last season and 144 two seasons ago.  We try to keep our fees to the minimum; most of our officials are volunteers. The league committee does not make a profit and our accounts are open to all league members.  The league and all participants are registered with the national governing body, England Basketball.

The League Tournament will take place at Bishop Challoner School, Hardinge Street (off Cable Street), Stepney E1 0EB.  The provisional start date is the 16th May 2009; maximum ten teams in two pools of five playing each other twice.  The top two teams from each pool will play the semifinals.  We will play our games on Saturdays.  However we may have to play some games on weekdays or on Sundays, depending on booking agreements.  The school is at walking distance from Shadwell station (DLR), and 10 minutes walking from Stepney Green or Whitechapel (District Line, Hammersmith & City Line).  The fee is £300 plus a £70 deposit for each team.  All teams will get their £70 deposit back at the end of the tournament provided that there have been no defaults, forfeits or any major incident.  Please see our handbook for terms and conditions.  Each team will be required to assist with table officiating duties in at least six games.  The fee will cover:

-      Referees and table officials fees

-      Court booking

-      Equipment

-      England Basketball licenses for up to 8 participants per team.  Teams will need to pay an additional £6 per extra player.  This does not apply to teams registered in the Cup Tournament.

-      Trophy

Club secretaries/captains would need to submit a complete team list, with their players details for registration and insurance:  full name, date of birth, street number, full post code, email address and ethnic background.  The first 10 teams that pay their fee will be accepted.  Each team will assist the league with a volunteer(s) to do the table in 6 games.

It is important that you keep a copy of the league handbook and make sure that your players are familiar with it.  All participants (players, coaches, referees, table officials, commissioners, court supervisors, etc) will have to be registered and licensed with the national governing body, England Basketball.  The league can arrange for your registration.

Below is link to a website that contains a map of the area, and a list of dates when the league could take place.  Please note that these dates are not confirmed yet.

Just to let you know that we have introduced some changes in this summer league:

- All referees and table officials will be volunteers. Therefore the league is only charging England Basketball registration and the basketball court hiring.

- The fee is now £200 per team

- We have 7 teams registered, one more to go!

- We are running a level 2 referee course on the 6th and 7th June, £100. Candidates can apply for a grant (70% of the fee, registration, uniform, child/adult care).

The current season has come to an end.  Latinos has won the summer league in a thrilling final on Sunday 2nd August 2009 at the Bishop Challoner Catholic School.  The final score (70-56) does not serve justice to Kilburn Tigers who kept fighting up to the very last second.  This result was a surprise as Kilburn Tigers had comfortably beaten Latinos during the regular season.

Latinos has won the league for a third year in a row.  This season they have brought new faces such as Jorge Gomez who was the top scorer in the final (26 points), followed by both Johan Galvez and Max Simon (13 points each).  Our congratulations to the coach, Carlos Villegas, for their first cup and third league title.

On the other side, Kilburn Tigers' best shooter was Anthony Tiukow (15 points) followed by Junior Omoteso (10 points).   They worked hard both on attack and defence but could not keep the pace of their oponents.  This is however an astonishing achievement for a young team that has played their first tournament in a local league.  We hope to see them playing (and winning!) finals in the future.

The league committe would like to thank the fourteen referees and seventeen table officials who have officiated on a voluntary basis a total of thirty five games in both our cup and league competitions this season.  Thanks to their support and dedication.  We were able to keep costs to a minimum (£200 per team), thus encouraging participation and making it possible for two hundred registered players to compete this season in two different competitions.

We would like to thank the site manager and members of staff at the Bishop Challoner Catholic School for their hard work and patience.

Congratulations to Edward Santos and Hojjat Fozi for being selected to referee the final.  They did a fine job.

Special thanks to the Polish Elite Basketball League for the free use of their electronic scoreboard.
